Back

What is Virtual Machine Manager?

Virtual Machine Manager, or better known as VirtManager, is a free and open-source desktop user interface provided for dedicated servers customers who want to run private cloud on their dedicated servers. Customers can use the VirtManager to manage their KVM-based virtual machines running on the dedicated servers, such as creating new VMs, starting/stopping VMs, access the VM's console, etc.

What OS and virtualization platform you recommend to run VirtManager?

VirtManager can be used to manage KVM and Xen virtual machines, as well as LXC containers, through libvirt. It can also run on different type of OS, such as Ubuntu, CentOS, etc. We recommend customers to use KVM virtualization running Ubuntu operating system.

Can VirtManager be used to manage VMs across multiple servers?

Yes, you can have multiple dedicated servers as hypervisor hosts and install VirtManager on only one of the servers. You can then configure VirtManager to manage VMs across multiple hypervisor hosts on your dedicated servers.

Any documentation on VirtManager where I can refer to?

Unfortunately, the documentation on how to use VirtManager is somewhat very limited. You can see some screenshots here:

https://virt-manager.org/screenshots/

Ubuntu has a better documentation on how to install and run VirtManager on Ubuntu platform:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/VirtManager

Is there any web-based interface version for VirtManager?

Unfortunately, no. VirtManager is a desktop-based interface, therefore you will need to install desktop version of the operating system (e.g. Ubuntu Desktop) on your dedicated server, and then access the desktop remotely using IPMI (provided upon request for all our customer's dedicated servers) or VNC client (you would need to install VNC server on your dedicated server).

Can you assist to install VirtManager for us?

Yes, you can engage our system administrator services for us to install VirtManager on your dedicated server running Ubuntu OS and KVM virtualization. You can also get our assistance to install all the necessary applications for you to run a private cloud on your dedicated server. Please reach out to us to get the quotation.
