Upgrading your SimplerCloud server without data loss - recommended precautions before upgrading

Back

Yes, it is possible for you to perform the upgrade (e.g. from Simple 1 plan into Simple 2 plan) of the servelet directly. Since it is an upgrade, there will be no risk of data loss during the upgrade itself, unlike a downgrade, which will cause data loss (there might be risk of data loss during partitioning resize, see below). Please take note that you need to turn off your servelet before the upgrade, and you would need to power on your servelet again after the upgrade is completed.

After the upgrade, the capacity of your servelet's CPU, RAM and the data-disk will be adjusted to follow the specification of the new plan. However, take note that when the capacity of the data-disk is being upgraded, the partition size will remain the same. For example, if previously you have 20 GB of data-disk (with 20 GB of partition) under Simple 1 plan, after the upgrade you will get 40 GB of data-disk capacity under Simple 2 plan, but still with the existing 20 GB of partition, while the new additional 20 GB will be new/unpartitioned.

You will then have two options:

1. First option is to try resizing the partition to follow the new capacity of the disk (e.g. resize from 20 GB to 40 GB), provided that the OS supports it. This is where the risk of data loss might happen during the partition resize. We would recommend customers to make a backup of their data-disk, before performing the partition resizing.

It's advisable for you to un-mount your data-disk first, before you perform the resize.

2. Second option is to create a new partition on the additional un-partitioned disk space. This will be much safer and will not cause any risk of data loss to your existing partition. However, you will have to mount the new partition on another mount point in your servelet (e.g. /data1 instead of /data).

Here are the steps on how you can perform the upgrade of your servelet.
